How to Handle Acid Reflux

The contents of the stomach are very acidic as this is necessary to help start the digestion process. Sometimes the contents of the stomach can escape into the esophagus, a condition known as acid reflux. Acid reflux causes chemical burns in the esophagus which can lead to sores (called ulcers), pain, and esophageal cancer. Normally acid reflux is prevented by a band of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter. However, sometimes this muscle can be too weak to prevent acid reflux.

Step 1

Make lifestyle changes that will minimize your reflux. These include avoiding foods that make your reflux worse (such as fatty, fried, or spicy foods, as well as tomato-based or acidic foods, as well as peppermint). Avoid caffeine and tobacco (they can make it worse) as well as lying down for three hours after eating. If you are overweight, lose excess weight and avoid tight-fitting clothing.

Step 2

Take antacids. According to the NIDDK, antacids may contain one or more of magnesium, calcium, or aluminum combined with a compound that neutralizes stomach acid. By neutralizing the stomach acid, they can help control acid reflux.

Step 3

Take medications that reduce acid production. There are two kinds of drugs that can reduce acid production in the stomach, according to Medline. One kind, called H2 blockers, includes the medications ranitidine and cimetidine, and blocks signals that cause the stomach to make more acid. The other kind, proton pump inhibitors (which include omeprazole and lansoprazole), work to stop the mechanism that causes acid production. Both of these can be purchased either over-the-counter or via prescription.

Step 4

Udnergo surgery. If non-surgical treatments are not able to control acid reflux, you may need surgical intervention, according to Medline. Surgery works to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter, sometimes by wrapping part of the stomach around it.

Things You'll Need

  • Antacids
  • H2 Blockers
  • Proton pump inhibitors
