Breathing exercises, also known as pranayama in Sanskrit, regulate the breath to improve the mind, body and spirit. With health benefits from improved digestion to better sleep, breathing exercises should be practiced daily for a minimum of 15 minutes in the morning, according to yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar. Pranayama may be performed using yoga props to help you breathe deeper and fully relax.

Step 1

Sit on the floor with your knees bent. Place both yoga blocks behind you, one at the lowest position and the other at medium height.

Step 2

Lie face up onto the blocks, shoulder blades on the shortest block and head on the other block.

Step 3

Relax your arms out to each side with palms up. Stretch both legs in front of you.

Step 4

Close your eyes and place an eye pillow over your eyelids if desired.

Step 5

Perform the breathing exercises of your choice.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you do not have access to yoga props, you can substitute by stacking folded blankets or pillows.
  • Do not perform breathing exercises with props if you have a severe backache, constipation or diarrhea. Swallow only after exhalations.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 yoga blocks
  • Eye pillow, optional
