mucinex
Mucinex (generic: guaifenesin) is a drug used in cases of respiratory system disease. It is called a mucolytic or an expectorant because it helps in breaking down mucus and facilitating the clearing of debris from the respiratory tract by coughing. An abstract available in the library of medicine of the National Institute of Health shows that the use of mucolytics is quite beneficial in obstructive respiratory disease, where it is indicated.
How Mucinex Works
The respiratory system is made up of a network of tubes, acting as conduits for transporting gases in and out of the body, that end in thin-walled, capillary-rich sacs where actual gaseous exchange takes place. The tubes are lined by specialized cells that carry hair-like cilia. The cells regularly produce mucus, which serves as a protective film of moisture and immune substances that trap potentially infective particles in the air. The cilia serve to continually move this mucus, with the trapped particles, upward and outward to avoid a buildup and blockage of the tubes.
In disease processes involving the respiratory system, like infections or other causes of inflammation, mucus secretion is increased, and with widespread destruction of the cells, the function of the cilia is hampered or overwhelmed. This leads to accumulation of mucus in the respiratory tract. This can either serve as breathing ground for bacteria or obstruct the airways, both of which will worsen the state of the patient.
Mucinex is a complex compound that traps water molecules. Its presence in the respiratory tract encourages the movement of water into the mucus, making it less sticky and easier to cough out. This leads to clearing up of the mucus buildup, a sense of relief for the patient and avoidance of further complications.
How Mucinex Is Used
Mucinex is formulated in diverse ways as liquids, tablets and capsules. It has long-acting and short-acting formulations. Mucinex is used alone or in combination with other agents like decongestants, cough suppressants and analgesics for symptomatic relief in respiratory conditions. It is available in over-the-counter preparations as well as by prescription.
Mucinex is particularly helpful in chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), where it has been shown to reduce complications and sick days for patients.
