Conjunctive Heart Failure Symptoms

Congestive heart failure refers to a crippling disease in which your heart is unable to pump enough blood to supply your body. According to the Mayo Clinic, atherosclerosis (fatty plaque buildup of your blood vessels), hypertension (high blood pressure), arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) and myocarditis (heart inflammation) are just some causes of congestive heart failure.

Shortness of Breath

According to the Mayo Clinic, you may experience shortness of breath when you suffer from congestive heart failure. You are more likely to experience this when you are taking part in physical activity such as exercise, or when lying down. Normally, your heart beats faster to supply adequate amounts of blood to your body when you exercise. Blood carries oxygen, so in congestive heart failure, your heart cannot keep up and you experience shortness of breath.

Swelling

MedlinePlus states that you may also develop swelling of your feet, ankles and abdomen. In congestive heart failure, too much fluid builds up in your body. The fluid drains to your lower extremities and results in peripheral edema (swelling) of your feet and ankles. This swelling is painless and can affect one or both of your feet. Also, this fluid can accumulate in your stomach and make it appear swollen. This condition is medically known as ascites.

Weight Gain

According to the Mayo Clinic, people with congestive heart failure frequently experience weight gain due to fluid retention. Call your doctor when you notice unintentional weight gain as this may be a harbinger for a very serious condition.

Other Symptoms

According to MedlinePlus, you may also experience nausea, vomiting, cough, palpitations (pounding heart beat), trouble sleeping and poor appetite. Difficulty concentrating and decreased urination are other symptoms. It is important to know that some people experience no symptoms with congestive heart failure. Visit your doctor regularly so she can properly evaluate your health.
