Burns and scars can be difficult to treat. Burns of any degree are prone to infection and have to be treated with care so that the skin isn't damaged any further. Scars, on the other hand, even though they are already healed, can be distressing to look at. Treatments are available that not only help the wounds to heal with minimal scarring, but also protect the wounds from infection.
Burn Treatments
Minor burns can be treated at home with burn ointments and salves. Aloe vera gel is soothing and can be found at most retail health food stores. Second- and third-degree burns should be seen by a doctor and treated accordingly. Burn injuries must be kept clean. When they occur on the arms, hands, legs and feet, keeping them elevated will minimize swelling and promote healing.
Scars
Scars vary in severity from mild to prominent. Vitamin E oil has been known to reduce scarring of minor to moderate wounds. Massage using silicone-based gels and lotions have also been known to reduce scarring in some instances. Stretch marks are a type of scar that can be benefited by massage.
Fighting Infection to Help Reduce Scarring
Keeping wounds lightly covered will keep bacteria from causing infections. Increasing the intake of fluids will also help the healing process. Adding vitamin C will boost the body's immune system and help the body heal from the inside out. Taking an echinacea supplement will also increase the body's resistance to infection.
