Reflexology is used as a complementary therapy to cleanse and heal the body. It is a holistic therapeutic method of applying pressure to the hands and feet to induce an effect on a target organ or body part. The specific areas mapped on the hands and feet are called "reflexes." Reflexology can benefit the entire body, including the reproductive system.

Reproductive System

In order to apply the principles of reflexology, it is essential to know what target organs you need to work on depending on the affliction or treatment needed. The main female reproductive organs consist of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The chief male reproductive parts are the penis, testicles and prostate gland.

Reflexes

The reflexes on the hands and feet corresponding to the reproductive organs should be worked on to stimulate the desired therapeutic effect. The authors of "Complete Reflexology for Life" advise that the solar plexus should also be worked on as well to reduce stress that can play an important role in reproductive functions. On the feet, the reproductive organs are reflected on the inner or medial aspect. They are all present in the posterior half of the foot near the heel, except for the area for the breasts, which is located a little distance from the little toe on the outer aspect of the foot. On the inner aspect of the foot, midway between the ankle bone and the heel are the areas for the uterus and prostate. The area for the ovary and testes is on the outer aspect of the foot, between the ankle bone and heel but a little lower than the uterus and prostate areas. The fallopian tube reflex is located along the outer aspect of the foot anterior to the ankle bone. The hand reflexes are present around the wrist. A reflexology zone or referral map outlines all of these areas for the practitioner.

Method

Because most of the reproductive reflexes are present around the ankle area, applying pressure to that general area is helpful. Similarly on the hand, the areas are located around the wrist. Refer to a reflexology map to target these areas in a more focused fashion; there are several techniques like thumb walking and rotating around a point. The fingers used to massage these areas also vary depending on whether light pressure or deeper pressure is needed. The number of sessions, length of each session and time period required for treatment is variable, and specific recommendations can be made only by a certified reflexologist.

Considerations

Although self-help is an option, you may want to find a certified reflexologist who can offer professional therapy sessions and relevant advice catered to your individual needs; however, practitioners of reflexology do not claim to cure any affliction, nor do they diagnose or prescribe for any ailment. Reflexology is a complementary and alternative therapy. It does not take the place of conventional medical treatment. If you have any serious medical problems, questions or concerns, see your doctor and get the necessary medical attention.
