If you are interested in cutting calories, you should avoid sugary drinks such as soft drinks and fruit juices with sugar added to them. You might feel as though you don't have many options for sugarless drinks, but that isn't the case. Whether you are in the mood for a savory drink, an herbal drink or a refreshing cooler, your options are as limitless as your creativity.
Infused Water
Plain water is the most natural option for staying hydrated. Most physicians recommend that you drink at least 64 oz. of noncarbonated water each day. However, if you are tired of plain water or in the mood for a little flavor with your beverage, make or purchase an infused water. Infused water is water with fruit, vegetables or even an herb like mint added. The addition gives the water a boost of flavor without adding sugar or chemicals. Add a little of your ingredient for a hint of flavor or a lot for a burst of flavor.
Tea
Tea is a naturally refreshing drink that can be enjoyed hot or cold. Some tea also has additional health benefits like antioxidants and flavonoids, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. You have many options to choose from. Choose a refreshing green tea, a flavorful herbal tea or a robust black tea. If you have a sweet tooth, many teas are naturally sweet. If you prefer a sweet tea, choose a tea that contains fruit or sweet spices like nutmeg or cinnamon.
Broth
Low-sodium meat or vegetable broth is a satisfying option that both quenches your thirst and satisfies hunger. The hearty flavor of the broth is especially helpful if you are dieting because you get the rich flavor with a much lower amount of fat and calories. For example, beef broth only has 7 calories and 0.22 grams of fat per 100 gram serving. Choose a reduced-sodium variety with less then 200 milligrams of salt to avoid consuming too much sodium.
Sugarless Drinks to Avoid
Avoid diet sodas and other beverages that contain aspartame or another artificial sweetener. According to the Mayo Clinic, many drinks that are advertised as sugar-free still contain calories. In addition, the sweet taste of the artificial sweeteners may confuse the brain and trick you into feeling hungry, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. If you have a craving for soda, diet soda is fine when enjoyed in moderation. However, for the most efficient hydration, you should choose a noncarbonated beverage that does not contain artificial ingredients or sweeteners.
