Some of the causes for stomach aches in toddlers include overeating, diarrhea, constipation, bowel problems, stress, lactose intolerance and eating fattening, sugary or spicy foods. While some causes of stomach upset point to serious illnesses and require a visit to the doctor, most cases are likely due to minor illness that should pass in time unless the pain is associated with other symptoms, such as a high fever. In the meantime, it's helpful to your child if you can provide her some relief until the pain subsides.

Step 1

Encourage your child to lay down while his stomach hurts. Provide him with books to read or have him watch television.

Step 2

Offer your child water frequently to increase her fluid intake to flush out the digestive tract and keep her hydrated.

Step 3

Prepare foods for your child that are gentle on the digestive tract, including white rice, crackers, toast, applesauce or bananas.

Step 4

Place a heating pad on your child's stomach or have him sit in a bathtub filled with warm water for about 20 minutes to soothe the pain.

Step 5

Massage your child's stomach in a circular motion to release gas bubbles and provide some relief from the pain.

Tips and Warnings

  • If your child is vomiting, wait for a few hours after she vomits before reintroducing food into her digestive tract so her stomach can calm down. Simethicone drops can relieve pain if it's associated with gas, while an antacid may soothe general stomach pains.
  • Contact your physician if your toddler's stomach ache is accompanied by other symptoms including vomiting, bloody stools, chills, a fever or dizziness.

Things You'll Need
