If a defined jaw and cheek bones are high on your wish list, you face good news and bad. On the down side, you can’t target weight loss toward this or any other body part because your body loses weight all over, and the areas it drops from first are determined by your genetic makeup and where you tend to store the most fat. The good news is your face tends to respond quickly to a weight loss program that involves aerobic activity, a healthy diet and toning exercises.
Step 1
Do regular aerobic exercise. No amount of toning exercise will give your face shape if the muscles are hidden under a layer of fat. To shift it, you need to work out aerobically for at least 30 minutes – and preferably longer – per session. It takes this long for your body to stop burning carbs for fuel and start using fat, says the Facts About Fitness website. The exercise you choose will also impact your weight loss success. Running, for example, will deliver results quicker than walking because you are working at a higher intensity and therefore burning more calories. Running also makes your muscles work harder than walking, which means they develop in strength and size at a faster rate, says website Running Planet. This is a weight-loss bonus because bigger, stronger muscles burn more calories – even at rest – than under-developed ones.
Step 2
Follow a healthy diet. The basic rule for losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume. So a low-fat diet combined with fat-burning aerobic exercise is vital for success. According to registered dietitian Kathleen Goodwin, on the Diet Channel website, focus on eating healthy rather than losing weight. For example, go for moderate rather than super-size portions and eat slowly so that your body registers when it feels full. Goodwin also advises that low-fat on the label doesn’t always mean it’s good for you because some fat-free foods have just as many calories as regular varieties, so read the information on the package carefully.
Step 3
Tone your face muscles. According to the TargetWoman health and beauty website, facial exercises promote blood flow to your face, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to keep your muscles and skin firm and toned. To tone your neck muscles for a more defined chin, tilt your head back so you’re looking at a point on the ceiling just in front of you. Pucker your lips as if you are trying to kiss the ceiling, exaggerating the action as much as you can. You should feel the muscles in your neck tighten. Hold for 10 seconds, relax and repeat five times.
