How to Take a Hot Shower to Peel Skin Off the Feet

Walking around without shoes or wearing sandals all summer can leave your feet with dry, peeling skin, and the closed-toed shoes required during the winter months can also deprive feet of vital moisture. A hot shower helps soften the dead skin on your feet, allowing you to safely and easily peel it away. Perform this treatment every night before you go to bed, and you'll have soft, smooth feet.

Step 1

Take a hot shower for at least 15 minutes to soften the dead skin on your feet. Do not take take a shower that is uncomfortably hot, because according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an adult exposed to water that is 120 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes can sustain third-degree burns. Extremely hot water will not help the skin slough off your feet any more efficiently than cooler water.

Step 2

Gently pat your feet dry and scrub the rough areas with a pumice stone or a foot file. Press down gently with the stone or file, and move it slowly in a back-and-forth motion. Scrub the skin on one foot for two minutes, then switch to the other foot. Stop scrubbing after your feet are completely dry and the dead skin does not slough away as easily. If your feet are extremely rough and have a lot of dead skin, do not try to slough it all away in one session. Take another hot shower the next day and repeat the scrubbing process, removing a small amount of dead skin at a time.

Step 3

Rinse your feet under warm water to remove any dead skin flakes.

Step 4

Pat your feet dry and apply foot cream to your heels and soles. Gently pull on a pair of socks and wear them overnight to help the lotion penetrate the rough areas of your feet.

Step 5

Rinse the pumice stone or foot file and allow it to dry.
