The pituitary gland is known as the master gland of the body. It is about the size of a pea, and is located at the base of the skull between the optic nerves. It is responsible for hormone secretion, and controls the other glands that produce hormones. Occasionally, the pituitary gland can develop benign tumors. These tumors usually are asymptomatic, but may require medicinal treatment. Herbs are an option for treatment but should be used under the care of a physician.

Pituitary Tumor

Pituitary tumors are fairly common; up to 20 percent of the population has been diagnosed. The cause is unknown. They are noncancerous, but they can produce too much of one type or many types of hormones. Symptoms of pituitary tumors include headaches, nasal drainage, decreased sense of smell, hyperthyroidism, nipple discharge and peripheral vision loss. An MRI and blood work will lead to a pituitary tumor diagnosis.

Chasteberry

Chasteberry is a type of herb that has been used for many years. It is most commonly used in hormonal issues such as easing menstrual and menopausal symptoms. It also has been studied and shown to increase the production of breast milk, decrease acne and aid in easing infertility. Chasteberry affects the hormone and dopamine levels in the brain. Do not take chasteberry if you have Parkinson's disease. It also should not be used if you are pregnant or on birth control pills. Talk to your doctor before taking any type of herbal supplements.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is an herb that is used to heal wounds, increase mental clarity and treat skin conditions. It is also used to increase blood flow to the brain and pituitary gland. Gotu kola can be found as dried herbs, tablets, teas, capsules and ointments. Each form contains a different dosage. For best results, the directions on the package should be followed. Do not start taking Gotu kola without consulting your doctor first.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a medicinal herb in which the leaves, sprouts and seeds can be used. It has the capabilities to act as an estrogen and can balance hormones. Alfalfa can be taken when a tumor is affecting hormone levels. It should only be used under the supervision of a doctor because of the side effects. Do not take alfalfa if you are taking blood thinners or birth control pills. The National Institute of Health suggest between 5 and 10 mg of alfalfa three times daily for best results.
