As you age, your skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity, contributing to fine lines and wrinkles. Certain lifestyle modifications, topical products and other treatments can help firm up your skin, giving you a more youthful appearance. While you can’t completely reverse the aging process, taking care of your skin can help firm and plump up thin, sagging skin. Talk to your dermatologist about your skin concerns, particularly if your skin is sensitive to topical products or you have a chronic skin condition.
Step 1
Apply an anti-wrinkle or anti-aging cream to areas where your skin is thin. Certain ingredients, including vitamin A or retinol, neuropeptides, kinetin and estrogen, help plump your skin and encourage collagen production, making it appear firmer.
Step 2
Smooth a noncomedogenic moisturizer over your face and neck daily to help your skin retain moisture and appear smoother and plumper.
Step 3
Protect your skin from the sun by wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Thinner skin is particularly susceptible to sun damage.
Step 4
Talk to your doctor about taking an omega-5 supplement to help firm thin skin and hold hydration in.
Tips and Warnings
- Discuss other treatment options with your dermatologist if over-the-counter products and home treatments aren’t firming up your skin as much as you’d like. In some cases, prescription creams or other treatments, such as Botox injections, help minimize wrinkles and plump skin better than over-the-counter products. Use your fingertips to dab products on areas of thin skin, particularly sensitive areas such as under your eyes. Pulling at sensitive thin skin can irritate it or even tear it open.
- Never apply topical products to sun-damaged skin or open wounds. Don’t use products with vitamin A derivatives if you’re pregnant or trying to conceive.
