Tympanoplasty is the surgical repair of the eardrum. The procedure is used to fix tears and perforations of the eardrum and to correct infections that may occur in the small bones of the ear. Exercise and activities that change the pressure in the ear, including swimming and diving, are prohibited during the early stages of recovery. You should resume swimming after a full recovery from a tympanoplasty carefully, under your doctor's direction.

Timing

Recovery from a tympanoplasty requires several weeks during which you are not allowed to swim or dive at all and must protect your ear from water even while bathing. Depending on your rate of recovery, you may return to swimming at between three and six weeks post-surgery. Your surgeon will examine your ear before giving you the green light to swim.

Protection

Once you are allowed to swim following your tympanoplasty, you must still ensure that water does not infect your newly repaired eardrum with bacteria. Wear wax-based ear plugs that conform to your ear shape and a bathing cup to prevent water from entering your ears. Swimmers who cannot successfully use "one size fits all" ear plugs may opt to have custom plugs created; personalization of the product ensures a better seal.

Technique

if you are a competitive swimmer, consult your ear surgeon after a tympanoplasty to determine whether it's appropriate for you to perform a diving start during racing. Swimmers who choose the form of exercise for leisure only should try to keep their heads above water to minimize the risk of damaging the surgical site.

Considerations

Signs of infection following eardrum repair surgery include redness, tenderness and malodorous drainage coming from your ear. Fever, chills and shortness of breath may also indicate complications stemming from your surgery. Speak to your surgeon about any symptoms that concern you regarding your recovery.
