Gas and Heartburn With Chipotle Peppers

Some people can eat spicy foods like chipotle peppers and experience no unpleasant side effects. However, for others, these foods can cause gas, heartburn and additional symptoms of indigestion. If you believe that chipotle peppers may be upsetting your digestive system, talk to your doctor about your symptoms and ask about eliminating trigger foods from your diet. Peppers and Other Trigger Foods

Certain categories of foods are more likely to cause gas and heartburn, also known as acid indigestion, than others, and chipotle peppers fall into these categories. For example, gas typically occurs after you eat high-fiber foods, such as fruits, whole grains, legumes and vegetables, like peppers. High-fiber foods can also cause heartburn, as can fatty, greasy and spicy foods. The best way to determine which foods are causing your symptoms is to keep a log of your meals, noting what you eat, how much and when indigestion occurs.

Managing Your Symptoms

If you have discovered that chipotle peppers give you gas and heartburn, try taking them out of your diet to see if your symptoms go away. But if you still experience negative symptoms after eliminating peppers, it could be that an additional food or factor is causing your indigestion. Eating too much too quickly can cause heartburn and gas to occur, and going to bed with a full stomach makes you more likely to experience acid indigestion as well. Try consuming smaller meals, eating slowly and avoiding eating three to four hours before bed. You may find that by following these guidelines, you are able to eat chipotle peppers without experiencing any negative effects.

Other Solutions

If you enjoy spicy foods like chipotle peppers but not the negative side effects that come with them, ask your doctor about taking antacids or other over-the-counter medications to help manage your symptoms. You might also consider working with a nutritionist to discover other spices and foods to enjoy that will not cause indigestion. However, keep in mind that if you experience heartburn on a regular basis, it is important to treat it, since over time, acid reflux can cause damage to your esophagus, which may be potentially serious.

Additional Considerations

Many people experience gas and heartburn from time to time, and these are not usually serious conditions. However, if your symptoms persist, cause pain or inhibit your ability to function on a daily basis, see your doctor. Tell her about the problems you have been having and what you believe is causing them, and she can help you devise a solution. Never change your diet or begin taking new medications without first consulting with your health care provider.
