A skin rash can manifest in many ways, from small red bumps to large lesions. Rashes can be very painful, causing stinging, burning and itching. The best treatment for a skin rash is to determine what caused it, but there are many treatment options that can help soothe any irritated skin. Whether the rash is caused by heat, allergies, rosacea or just dry skin, there are ways to relieve your itch and reduce the pain and irritation.

Prevent Further Irritation

The first step in providing relief for a skin rash is to prevent further irritation. Do not scrub your skin in the shower or bath, and only use mild soap. Do not bathe in hot water, only use warm or cool water while bathing and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it. If you have recently started using a new product for your hair, skin or clothes, stop using it until the rash goes away. You could be having an allergic reaction to a new perfume, deodorant or laundry detergent. Leave the affected skin open to the air as much as possible, and avoid wearing tight clothing.

Topical Treatments

Over-the-counter creams containing hydrocortisone can help with itching associated with many rashes. Aloe vera gels can also provide relief, particularly those designed for sunburns that also contain lidocaine for pain. Avoid using any lotions or gels with alcohol, as this can make your rash worse. Lotions with lanolin can moisturize and soothe skin, but avoid cosmetic lotions with added fragrances. Bath products containing oatmeal can soothe itchy skin, and can be found in most pharmacies. Calamine lotion, which contains zinc oxide, can help soothe skin and relieve itching as well.

Natural Remedies

There are many alternative or natural ways to alleviate skin rashes. According to the University of Maryland, the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture recommends acupuncture to help skin rashes caused by food allergies. Certain herbs, such as milk thistle, bromelain or turmeric, can be used to boost the immune system and relieve symptoms. Green tea is also beneficial for inflammation caused by a skin rash. Vitamins such as Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin C can support the immune system and aid in the healing process.

Medical Care

If the skin rash persists, or new symptoms develop, medical treatment may be necessary. Antihistamines may be prescribed for severe allergic reactions. Steroid injections, pills or topical creams can also be prescribed for more serious skin ailments. Light therapy, or phototherapy, involves exposing a person to specific ultraviolet wavelengths and can relieve symptoms of a severe rash. Your physician may want to complete a physical exam to rule out any serious illnesses that may be the underlying cause of the skin rash in long-term, severe cases. Anyone experiencing fever, difficulty breathing, joint pain or sore throat should seek medical attention as soon as possible, especially during pregnancy.
