Commercial energy drinks are often packed with sugar, providing a quick surge of energy from refined carbohydrates. Homemade energy drink recipes may call for as much as nine to 10 tbsp. of sugar, making them no better for you than the store-bought variety. While honey is also high in sugar and carbohydrates, you may find it to be sweeter than sugar and impart a distinctive taste to your homemade energy drinks. Substituting honey for sugar is largely a matter of personal taste.

Step 1

Substitute raw honey instead of refined honey. Processed honey has been stripped of the antioxidants, enzymes and phytonutrients that make raw honey a superfood. Refined honey also might contain high-fructose corn syrup.

Step 2

Reduce the honey by 1/3 compared with the sugar you would use. For example, if your recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, use 2/3 cup of honey.

Step 3

Melt the honey in a small amount of hot water before adding it to your energy drink. Simmer the water on the stove or heat it in the microwave oven, and then stir in the honey. Eliminating clumps helps the honey blend into your energy drink more easily.

Step 4

Add the honey water to your energy drink a little at a time, stirring and taking sips as you go. If you find honey to be sweeter than sugar or to have an overpowering taste, use less rather than more.

Step 5

Continue adding honey water until the drink is as sweet as you want it.
