Although physicians such as Quackwatch's Dr. Stephen Barrett dismiss the health claims of so-called detox diets that involve extensive fasting and substitute liquids for solid food, they remain popular with Hollywood celebrities. In fact, some of the world's most popular stars claim to have successfully slimmed down using liquid fast diets.

Cooler Cleanse

A 2010 article in "New York" magazine discusses actress Salma Hayek's devotion to a detox juice fast called Cooler Cleanse. The cleanse, created by Eric Helms to meet Hayek's specifications, is available in three-day and five-day versions, with juice delivered to clients throughout the U.S. The plan allows dieters to consume 1,200 calories per day divided between six fresh juice drinks. Helms' juices are available in five different flavors, including a green juice, grapefruit mint, red juice with beets and apples, coconut water and nut milk sweetened with dates.

Master Cleanse

When singer/actress Beyonce Knowles needed to lose weight fast to begin filming the screen adaptation of the Broadway hit "Dreamgirls," she slimmed down using the Master Cleanse. The Master Cleanse, devised in the 1940s but popularized in the 1970s, is a 10-day fast in which dieters initially eat no solid food, drinking a liquid concoction of water, fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. On the Celebrity Diet Doctor website, Knowles claims to have lost 20 lbs. on the crash diet, although she admits she quickly gained the weight back after ending the fast.

We Care Spa

An article on the website of "The Chicago Tribune" notes that a former "Sports Illustrated" swimswuit model and one-time star of the NBC TV series "Las Vegas" is a devotee of the liquid fast diet offered at the We Care Spa in Desert Hot Springs, California. The fast limits caloric intake to a maximum of 400 per day, taken in via liquids containing wheat grass, lemon water and vegetable juice, and also includes a regimen of colonics. The "Tribune" article also reveals that former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Lisa Rinna is also a fan of the We Care Spa fasts.

iZo Cleanze Detox Program

The same "Chicago Tribune" story also discusses the popularity of the iZO Cleanze, which has reportedly been undertaken by celebrities such as model Daisy Fuentes, "The Middle" star Patricia Heaton, "Monk" star Tony Shalhoub and Allison Janney of "The West Wing." According the the iZO website, this liquid fast diet is a full-body detox that reputedly cleanses the bladder, kidneys, blood, liver and bowels. On the site, "CSI: Miami" actress Eva Larue offers a testimonial about the fast, calling it an "amazing experience." The diet plan consists of pills and powders that you can blend into fresh juices during your fast.
