When you are trying to make positive changes in your life, it can be challenging to motivate yourself. Because change often requires a great deal of initiative, time and dedication, the right inspiration can increase your chances of success. By recruiting your personal beliefs and working style, you can come up with positive motivations to help you along the way.

Choose Manageable Steps

Making big changes in your life can feel overwhelming, particularly when it requires a major shift in the way you behave or go about normal tasks. Rather than approach your goal in an all-out fashion, break it down into smaller, more realistic steps. If you are trying to lose weight, for example, start by making small dietary changes or by going to the gym a couple of times a week. Write down your goals and mark them off each time you complete one; seeing your progress in the short term can motivate you to keep going for the long term.

Reward Yourself

When you are moving toward a goal, small rewards can help motivate you to keep going when things get tough. Choose rewards that do not conflict with the goal: if you are revamping your eating habits, for example, do not use junk food as a reward. Set up a reward for each small goal along the way. Consider a manicure, a new outfit, a special activity that you enjoy, or a short vacation.

Eliminate Distractions

No matter what kind of change you want to initiate in your life, you face distractions along the way to success. Careershifters recommends that you stay focused on the goal to avoid straying off the path. If you are looking for a new job, for example, you can stay focused by looking for information that relates to your ideal career rather than the wealth of options available. The same goes for people who are distracting: explain your goal so they can be supportive, or minimize your time spent with people who try to derail your efforts.

Stay Positive

Avoid getting down on yourself along the way to your goal by staying positive. Identify people in your life who cheer you up, and seek out people who have accomplished similar life changes. Don't be discouraged by small setbacks; instead, stay focused on the larger goal. In the process of getting to a goal, work on changing your negative beliefs so you can become your own biggest cheerleader. Staying positive can keep you focused and motivated no matter what happens along the way.
