The major difference between walking and working out on an elliptical trainer is that you can walk outside, but it is difficult to use an elliptical machine anywhere but inside where there is access to electricity. Nevertheless, both walking and exercising on an elliptical trainer can be effective methods of exercise. There are a number of advantages to working out on an elliptical trainer, though, ranging from decreased risk of injury to a more complete body workout.
Low Impact
Although exercising on an elliptical trainer mimics the movements of walking by requiring circular movement of your legs and an upright posture, elliptical trainers allow you to execute those motions without putting stress from impact on your joints and bones. The key feature for elliptical trainers is that your feet never leave the pads they stand on. When you walk, your feet leave the ground and then hit the ground at varying intensities – it is this impact that can cause stress fractures to your feet or lead to other overuse and impact injuries over time in your ankles, knees, and lower back.
Upper Body
Some elliptical trainers not only offer grips for balance, they also have poles that move along with your arms as you work out. If you grip these poles, you can work your upper body, too. This helps you tone your entire body and burn more calories than walking. Gripping the poles also prevents you from leaning too far forward; instead, you develop the core muscles necessary to maintain healthy posture.
Reverse Intensity
Although you can walk backward on a treadmill or the street, it can be a dizzying and dangerous experience. On an elliptical machine, however, you can “pedal” the machine backward, steadying yourself with the grips, to work a different set of muscles. Pedaling backward works your hamstrings and calves more than pedaling forward. In addition, it can be difficult to increase your intensity while walking without breaking into jogging or running. On an elliptical trainer, however, you can adjust the resistance to provide more intensity.
Features and Programs
Most elliptical trainers provide computerized features that can remember your workouts or plan workouts of varying intensities. These programs can help you focus your workout toward your particular goals -- heart rate, muscle work, etc.-- and store your personal statistics so you can track your progress.
