Magnesium is an important mineral for the healthy functioning of many organs and systems in a toddler's body. Although the best way to get it is through diet, many toddlers do not eat enough whole grains, nuts and green leafy vegetables to have a healthy level of magnesium. Magnesium supplements are sometimes used to treat toddlers with certain medical conditions such as constipation. It can also be used to treat sleep disorders such as insomnia or restless leg syndrome. You can give your toddler magnesium by increasing the mineral in his diet, by giving him epsom salt baths in which the magnesium is absorbed through the skin, or by giving him supplements.
Increase Magnesium in Your Toddler's Diet
Step 1
Cook green leafy vegetables into sauces or dips your child enjoys such as spaghetti sauce.
Step 2
Make green smoothies by mixing green leafy vegetables with vegetables or fruits your toddler enjoys, such as bananas, apples or carrots. Combine the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If your child only enjoys sweet smoothies, mix green leafy vegetables with chocolate or yogurt.
Step 3
Make kale or spinach chips by sprinkling fresh kale leaves with olive oil and salt and then baking at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Give the kale chips to your toddler along with a dip she enjoys such as mild salsa or bean dip.
Give Your Toddler Epsom Salt Baths
Step 1
Fill your toddler's bath tub with warm water.
Step 2
Dissolve 1 cup Epsom salt into the warm water.
Step 3
Bathe your child in the Epsom salt water. Allow him to soak for at least 20 minutes. Do not allow him to drink the water.
Step 4
Rinse with plain water after the bath is finished, if desired. You can also allow the Epsom salt to dry on your toddler's skin.
Give Your Toddler Magnesium Supplements
Step 1
Give your toddler a multivitamin containing vitamin B and calcium along with the magnesium supplement.
Step 2
Start with a dosage of no more than 40 mg per day.
Step 3
Use a powdered form of magnesium. Mix with water to make a flavored drink.
Step 4
Mix the flavored magnesium drink with your toddler's favorite juice if necessary to encourage her to drink it.
Step 5
Watch your toddler for signs of upset stomach such as diarrhea.
Step 6
Increase the dosage gradually if necessary, up to 80 milligrams per day. Continue to watch for signs of upset stomach, and lower the dosage if your toddler develops diarrhea.
