Whether you have had dry and coarse hair for years or have recently discovered your hair is brittle and frizzy, it is not impossible to return your hair to a shiny, soft and smooth texture. Coloring, bleaching, using heat products regularly and poor nutrition are all damaging to the health of your hair. Do not expect results right away, especially if nutrient deficiency is at fault. Softer, moisturized hair may take one to two months to appear.

Step 1

Increase your vitamin intake. Biotin, found in foods such as carrots, lettuce and tomatoes, helps build strong hair and nails. Add biotin-rich foods to your diet or take a supplement, which are available at health food or vitamin stores. A lack of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in fish, shellfish, walnuts and green, leafy vegetables, can cause brittle and dry hair. Vitamin C, copper and iron deficiencies can also lead to coarse hair. Talk to a doctor or nutritionist to find out what is right for you.

Step 2

Prepare a home-made hot oil treatment. Heat up 1 cup of regular mayonnaise in the microwave and then apply to hair from root to tip. Comb through and wait 15 minutes. Wash thoroughly with gentle shampoo. For a fragrant treatment, heat up coconut oil in the microwave and massage oil into the scalp. Comb through from root to end. Wrap your hair in a warm towel and wait for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Perform a hot oil treatment every two to four weeks depending on the dryness of your hair.

Step 3

Create a moisture-locking mask using ingredients in your kitchen. Use once a month or more often if needed. Combine 1 egg with 1 tsp. of water and massage into hair. Allow to dry for 15 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. For a thicker mask, combine 1 avocado, 3 tbsp. olive oil, 3 tbsp. honey and 1 banana in a blender and mix. Add more olive oil for a smoother texture. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

Step 4

Purchase a shampoo made for dry and coarse hair that contains ingredients such as coconut oil or Shea butter. Select a leave-in conditioner with silicone to smooth hair. Organic products use natural and gentle ingredients to prevent stripping of the hair’s natural chemicals. Check the label for artificial ingredients and look for natural ingredients such as jasmine or coconut oil. Shampoo hair every few days to prevent over-drying.

Step 5

Trim hair every four to six weeks. Cutting off dead ends prevents damage to the entire hair strand.

Step 6

Avoid extreme heat from hair dryers, curling irons, curlers and straighteners on a daily basis. Reduce your usage to once per week or less to allow hair to regain moisture. If necessary, purchase ceramic or ionic products that reduce damage and seal in moisture.

Step 7

Massage argan or hemp seed oil into extra dry ends. It is common for the ends of the hair to be drier than the roots. The oil restores and locks in moisture.
