Rapid weight loss can lead to loose, sagging folds of skin, especially if you don't have a healthy diet and don't practice proper skin care. When you have excess fat, your skin becomes overstretched. Losing that fat quickly doesn't give the skin time to heal and reshape itself. With proper nutrition, hydration, healthy exercise and daily skin care, you can keep your skin young and beautiful.

Losing Weight Safely

Losing too much weight at once isn't healthy for any part of your body, including your skin. According to MayoClinic.com, a healthy rate of weight loss is about 1 to 2 lbs. per week. When you have significant excess fat, your skin overstretches to contain it. This can break down its collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin taut and supple. When you lose your fat too rapidly, the skin doesn't have enough time to repair itself. Slower weight loss can give the skin the time it needs to reshape.

Proper Diet

Your skin requires several vitamins, minerals and macronutrients to stay healthy and toned. Vitamins A, E and C are vital for skin health, as are zinc and selenium. In addition, do not cut out all fats while you try to lose weight because your skin needs good fats, including polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Eat plenty of nuts, seeds, olive oil, citrus fruits and orange vegetables to keep your skin glowing.

Hydration

Drinking a big glass of water isn't just satisfying after a long workout; it's also vital for your body's health, including your skin. Water flushes toxins and carries essential nutrients through the body. However, drinking excess water doesn't appear to keep your skin more hydrated. Instead, applying a moisturizer directly on the skin is the best approach to keeping it supple and smooth. Healthy, hydrated skin is better able to repair itself, so moisturize regularly, especially after you shower.

Avoid Damage

Several activities can damage skin, making it harder for the cells to repair themselves and reshape to your new body size. Always avoid overexposure to sunlight by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF. The sun's UV rays degrade the proteins that make up the skin's framework, so the skin becomes loose and saggy. In addition, avoid smoking -- even second-hand smoke. Smoking narrows the blood vessels, which prevents skin from receiving nutrients and makes it look much older than it is.
