Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by poor or insufficient production of certain hormones by the thyroid gland. The ill effects of this condition worsen over time and can lead to joint pain, obesity, infertility and heart disease, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fortunately, hypothyroidism can be treated to bolster the activity of the gland. Whether caffeine can contribute to this increased activity is unclear.

Risk Factors

Many risk factors can increase your likelihood of developing hypothyroidism. Women older than 50 are more likely to develop the condition. It is affected by autoimmune diseases and is more likely to pass on to you if you have close relatives with autoimmune diseases. Radiation treatments used for other conditions could affect your thyroid if they are applied to the chest or neck, and thyroid surgery can also lead to hypothyroidism.

Supplementing Your Hypothyroidism

Controlling your intake of substances can improve the condition of your hypothyroidism. You should eat foods high in B vitamins and iron, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, although you shouldn't take iron supplements because the high dosage can interfere with thyroid hormone medications. Fruits and other high-antioxidant foods are beneficial, and you should restrict your use of alcohol and tobacco. Caffeine's effects are not directly addressed by medical experts, but there is a possibility of stimulation due to the drug's stimulant effects on other glands in the body.

Caffeine's Effects

Caffeine's stimulant effects can lead to increased activity in your body, increasing your heart rate and improving alertness. But medical experts do not identify any link between caffeine and hypothyroidism. However, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports that individuals who suffer from hypothyroidism should consult a doctor before increasing caffeine consumption.

Considerations

Talk to your doctor if you are interested in using caffeine to stimulate your thyroid gland. Caffeine can interact badly with certain medications and conditions, and taking large amounts of the drug could be hazardous to your health. There are also other proven methods of treating hypothyroidism that are more reliable than using caffeine.
