Elliptical machines are available with fixed or variable stride width, which can be determined by examining the exercise equipment's pedals. With a variable stride elliptical machine, you can adjust the stride for different users. The width of the stride is an important consideration for a comfortable workout. Taller people usually have longer strides and might feel cramped on an elliptical with a short stride. Most elliptical machines have a stride width of 16 inches, 18 inches, 20 inches, 21 inches or 22 inches. If you don't know the stride width of an elliptical machine, you can measure it.
Step 1
Kneel next to the pedals and pull them apart as far as they will go.
Step 2
Measure, in inches, from the toe portion of the front pedal to the heel area of the back pedal. This is the stride measurement.
Step 3
Determine if the stride is appropriate for you based on your height. Use a 16-inch or 18-inch stride width if you are 5-foot-3 or shorter. If you are 5-4 to 5-7, select an elliptical with an 18-inch or 20-inch stride. If you are taller than 5-7, select a 20-inch or longer stride width.
Tips and Warnings
- The best stride for you comes down to comfort. A longer stride width offers more options because you don't have to extend the pedals fully when exercising. However, if you have a naturally long stride and use an elliptical with a short stride width, you cannot extend the pedals past the set stride limit. Because of the machine's design, a front drive elliptical machine has a shorter, choppier stride. A 20-inch stride on a front drive machine feels similar to an 18-inch stride on a rear drive machine.
