Therapy, or exercise, balls keep the spine straight. This is an advantage for those looking to strengthen the back after injury or damage to the discs. Exercising can help relieve pain from back injuries, according to Dr. Ron Daulton Jr., a chiropractor and author. Bouncing on an inflated ball provides oxygenation to the spine by increasing blood flow. You should discuss any exercise routines with your doctor before beginning. Your physician may require you to work with a physical therapist to help rehabilitate your back.
Step 1
Inflate the ball following the directions provided with the product. Select a ball large enough for you to sit comfortably as if on a chair. Your feet should stay flat on the floor.
Step 2
Sit down with your buttocks in the center of the ball. Keep your back straight and let your arms hang down at the sides.
Step 3
Press your feet into the floor and pull up slightly in the back while squeezing your buttocks. The butt should rise only a 1/2 inch or less, but not leave the ball.
Step 4
Lower back down to the starting position and repeat the process for five minutes a day.
Tips and Warnings
- As an alternative, tilt the hips slightly forward instead of lifting them up. You can do whichever exercise is more comfortable or do both.
- Stop doing the exercise if you experience any pain in your back. This process is not a cure for a herniated disc. Talk to your doctor before starting any exercise to strengthen your back.
