It is critical to heal cracked, sore nipples to breastfeed comfortably. Otherwise, not only do the breasts feel painful, but bacteria can get into the wound and cause serious infections, such as mastitis. Breast creams are used to soothe sore nipples from breastfeeding, but not all creams are equal in terms of safety and effectiveness.
Reason
While breastfeeding should not make your nipples cracked or sore, positioning your baby incorrectly during breastfeeding can cause this condition. Other causes for sore, cracked nipples include dry skin, eczema or other allergic skin conditions, or using a breast pump incorrectly.
Lanolin
Medical-grade modified lanolin breast cream is helpful in treating painful cracks on the breasts. It's made especially for those who are breastfeeding because it is safe for the baby to ingest; you do not need to wash it off before you feed your baby. Rub the lanolin on your breasts throughout the day, especially after each feeding and whenever your nipples feel dry or sore. The lanolin keeps the nipple moist and allows it to heal faster.
Other Creams
Avoid using petroleum-based products. Petroleum products do not allow air in for the breasts to heal properly, and petroleum is not proven safe for babies to ingest. If an antibiotic ointment is necessary to heal the nipples, use it sparingly after each feeding. It is not necessary to wash off the antibiotic ointment before feeding your baby since the baby is only ingesting a small amount of the cream. With other creams, particularly herbal creams, consult your physician for advice before using them.
Other Options
To minimize breast soreness and allow your breasts to heal quicker, check your baby's positioning each time you nurse. Switch the positioning and which side you nurse on first at each feeding to minimize the stress on each nipple. Bathe with clear water and do not use soaps, perfumes or lotions on your nipples. Rub breast milk on each nipple after each feeding; the breast milk moisturizes the nipples and aids in healing. Take a painkiller containing acetaminophen or ibuprofen about 30 minutes before you plan to nurse to minimize the pain.
