Changes in your lifestyle, such as incorporating regular exercise, can cause changes in your menstrual cycle. Normally, exercising can help regulate and improve the menstrual cycle and lessen symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome; however, extreme workouts or sports can make your period late or absent.

Benefits of Exercise

Exercising at least 30 minutes a day can support health by reducing the risk of developing type-2 diabetes and heart disease and lowering blood cholesterol and blood pressure. Exercising daily can also help control mood, sleep and appetite. Women who have irregular menstrual cycles may be told to exercise daily to regulate the cycle.

Amenorrhea

Primary amenorrhea is the absence of the menstrual cycle after previously having had regular menstrual cycles. The number one reason for a missed menstrual cycle is pregnancy and changes in hormone levels. Changes in hormones may be the result of using intrauterine devices that contain progesterone, the presence of uterine fibroids or the development of polycystic ovary syndrome. However, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, absent menstrual cycles can also be the result of exercising too much.

Consideration

Although every healthy adult is recommended to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, adding exercise to your routine, making changes in diet or experiencing weight loss can cause abnormal menstrual cycles. In most cases, this is temporary. However if it is prolonged, consult your physician as it may be due to another condition. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, consult your physician before starting an exercise program.

Concerns

Since there are many causes of abnormal menstrual cycles, do not begin try to treat it without consulting a physician. If you are taking medications and missed a menstrual cycle, notify your physician.
