Debating over the importance of cardio exercises versus ab exercises isn't necessary. Cardio exercises and ab exercises perform two different functions one should not replace the other. While each offer individual benefits, their collective impact is far more valuable. Both contribute to your overall health and should be part of your fitness plan.
Cardio exercises
Cardio-respiratory exercises are also commonly known as aerobic exercises because they improve the rate at which your body uses oxygen. Cardio exercises involve the rhythmic movement of certain groups of muscles over an extended period. This causes an elevation in your heart rate and an increase in the energy demands of the body. Cardio exercises are an effective way of burning off the glucose and fatty acids present in your bloodstream, as well as those stored as body fat. Common examples include walking, jogging, swimming, dancing and cycling.
Ab Exercises
Ab exercises are strength-training routines that build your core abdominal muscles. You can either use your body weight or work with gym equipment. When done correctly, abdominal exercises are very effective in toning the targeted muscle group. They do not, however, burn as many calories as cardio exercises. Good examples of cardio exercises include the bicycle maneuver, vertical crunch, leg raises and the reverse crunch.
Ab Development
A combination of both cardio and ab exercises can give you a flatter looking midsection. Cardio exercises are ideal for burning off the belly fat. Cardio exercises can also lower your body fat percentage and improve your general cardio-respiratory fitness. Ab exercise tones your core muscles. This can improve the definition of your abs, protect you from back injury and improve your posture and balance.
Exercise Frequency
To stay fit, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends that you engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate cardio activity or 60 minutes of intense cardio activity each week. MayoClinic.com lists exercises like walking or dancing among moderate cardio activities. Good examples of intense cardio routines include running and cycling at about 8 mph. You should exercise your ab muscles at least twice a week.
