Thinning hair can make you feel unattractive or old beyond your years. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, watching your hair get thinner can make you feel powerless. Many products are on the market to aid with thickening the hair. However, you may be able to encourage hair growth and prevent further hair loss by using the at-home remedy of vinegar. Never attempt self-treatment without consulting a doctor first.
Causes of Thinning Hair
Thinning hair can occur for numerous reasons. Hereditary conditions like pattern baldness and some autoimmune disorders can cause it, as well as hormone fluctuations, inflammation, bacteria and fungi, according to FamilyDoctor.org.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar might stimulate the hair follicles and stimulate new growth, according to the online version of the health and wellness magazine "Alive." Apple cider vinegar, specifically, is thought to improve circulation and allow the follicles to receive greater oxygen. Over time, this can encourage the growth of healthier hair, says "Alive."
Application
The primary vinegar treatment for thinning hair is topical. According to Earl Mindell, M.D. and author of "Dr. Earl Mindell's Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar," you can combine 1 cup of warm water with 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar and rinse your hair with it before washing each day.
Precautions
Vinegar can be harsh on the skin, so if you have open sores or irritation on the scalp, it may be best to skip this treatment, says Mindell. If irritation develops after use or doesn't get better within a week, see a doctor for an alternative course of care.
