Neuropathy occurs when one or more nerves have damage that prevents transporting information between the nerve and brain. This condition may occur in any person, but diabetics have an increased risk, particularly for peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage involving the extremities. You may experience tingling or numbness, as well as weakness in the affected area. Treatment may help reduce symptoms, but herbal supplements such as ginger do not cause, treat or prevent neuropathy.

Ginger

Ginger is the root of the plant called Zingiber officinale, and varieties of ginger have a history of medicinal uses that dates back thousands of years. You may use ginger in recipes or marinades, but you can also find ginger extracts, oils and capsules.
Although ginger does not have a known benefit for neuropathy, this root may have other health benefits. Ginger tea or supplements may help reduce nausea associated with pregnancy, motion sickness and chemotherapy. Ginger may also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Side Effects

Ginger does not treat neuropathy, but this root does not cause neuropathy either. However, if you use ginger as a supplement, you could experience other side effects. You could experience heart burn or an upset stomach. In the case of an allergic reaction, you may have inflammation in the tissues of your mouth and face, rash and difficulty breathing. As well, if you have a blood condition or take medications to thin your blood, your doctor may not recommend ginger because this root may affect the properties of your blood.

Treatment

In many cases of neuropathy, doctors must treat the cause for the condition to improve tingling, pain and other symptoms. If neuropathy stems from an infection or disease, your doctor may prescribe medication to resolve or control your condition. Vitamin deficiencies may also cause neuropathy symptoms, and restoring the nutrient levels in your blood may resolve your symptoms.
However, diabetics and people with nerve damage and other incurable conditions may continue to suffer from neuropathy. Doctors may prescribe pain medication, antidepressants, other medications or therapy to help control symptoms.

Considerations

If you experience signs of neuropathy such as tingling in extremities or loss of sensation, talk to your doctor. She will begin testing to determine the cause for your condition and discuss necessary steps to help your condition.
You should not begin using ginger or other supplements without first discussing the product with your doctor. This will help prevent drug interactions or other complications.
