Heart disease and cancer are two of the leading causes of death for men. Exercise and eating right help control weight, which reduces the risk for both heart disease and certain cancers. Only 52 percent of men in the United States reached the guidelines for physical activity in 2008, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Encouraging your husband to exercise more and eat a healthier diet can help him improve his overall health and reduce serious health risks while reducing or maintaining his weight.

Step 1

Set your own goals for the amount of exercise and dietary changes you want to make. Discuss those goals with your husband. Encourage him to make his own diet and exercise goals.

Step 2

Stock your house with nutritious foods to provide your husband with easy access to a healthy diet. Include healthy snack foods like yogurt and precut vegetables and fruit for convenience.

Step 3

Sit down with your husband to plan a healthy menu for both of you. Incorporate his favorite dishes, but make healthy changes by substituting low-fat ingredients or healthier items into the recipes.

Step 4

Dish out meals to help both of you keep your portion sizes healthy. Measure the food if necessary to get the correct amount.

Step 5

Pack work lunches for your husband to ensure he has a healthy meal to eat at the office. Send tasty, low-calorie snacks with him to tide him over during the morning and afternoon.

Step 6

Plan date nights with the meal starting at home so you are able to prepare a healthier meal that you would eat at a restaurant. Include an active component to the date, such as going to the batting cages or taking a romantic walk together.

Step 7

Ask your husband to exercise with you. If he doesn't enjoy your usual workout, choose one or two days a week to change your workout to something he likes to do.

Step 8

Compliment your husband occasionally to show him that you notice his efforts to improve his health.
