Side Effects & Interactions of Yohimbe

Yohimbe is a controversial herb, as little scientific evidence is available in 2009 to support its benefits. In commercial preparations and supplements, the herb is marketed for various uses, such as erectile dysfunction and muscle building. If you are taking other medications, ask a medical professional about the safety of yohimbe. Side effects and drug interactions are possible.

Potentially Dangerous Side Effects

Most people believe herbal remedies are a safe alternative to conventional medicine. However, just because herbs like yohimbe are plant-based does not guarantee they are safe. Taking yohimbe may present potentially dangerous side effects, especially if taken in large amounts for extended periods. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), high blood pressure and increased heart rate are associated with the use of yohimbe.

Drug Interactions

Herbal products are not strictly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. According to familydoctor.org, they could contain ingredients not listed on the label, causing illness and drug interactions. In addition, some herbs can affect the way the body processes drugs, making some medications less effective. Yohimbe can interact with medications like tricyclic antidepressants and medication taken for mental health disorders like schizophrenia (phenothiazines). In addition, the NCCAM suggests using caution with MAO inhibitors or high blood pressure medications. Those with kidney problems should not use yohimbe, as the body is unable to process waste normally and herbal preparations containing yohimbe may also contain toxic heavy metals such as lead or mercury, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

Other Side Effects

Other side effects that may occur with yohimbe include headache, dizziness and sleeplessness. Taking only the recommended dosage of yohimbe may help reduce the risks of these side effects.
