Viagra, generically sold as sildenafil, is a medication used to treat impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction). Erectile dysfunction refers to a common condition in which men are unable to have an erection long enough for sexual intercourse.
Features
According to Drugs.com, Viagra relaxes muscles in penile blood vessels. This subsequently increases blood flow and results in an erection.
Side Effects
According to the MedlinePlus, Viagra's common side effects include headache, diarrhea, heartburn, flushing and trouble sleeping. You may also experience numbness, tingling and light sensitivity.
Warning
Nitrate medications (used for chest pain) are not to be combined with Viagra. Doing so can lead to severe hypotension (low blood pressure), heart attack, stroke or fainting spells, says Drugs.com.
Other Names
Sildenafil is also sold under the brand name Revatio.
Overdose
Drugs.com says that symptoms of Viagra overdose include chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, fainting and nausea. It's recommended to call 911 when these symptoms occur.
