Verapamil is a medication that is designed to block channels that can lead to irregular heart beats. Verapamil also blocks these channels in blood vessels to cause a lowering of blood pressure and exertional chest pain. In addition, Verapamil has been recently prescribed for cluster headaches. It is not a first-line medication that is usually chosen but commonly supplements other blood pressure or heart medications that you may be taking. Serious Side Effects
Although Verapamil is used irregular heartbeats, it can actually cause one as a side effect. A study in the American Academy of Neurology in 2007, reviewed the incidence of irregular heart beats in 108 patients who had electrical heart monitoring. Nineteen percent had an irregular heartbeat and 36 percent had heart rate slowing. These researchers further suggest that patients are monitored in case of heart beat abnormalities. If you are feeling dizzy or suspect that you have a problem with your heart, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Less Serious Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, "side effects associated with this combination drug have been mild and transient." Therefore, if your physician administers the appropriate doses of verapamil, then side effects are less likely. Some of these side effects include constipation, headache, dizziness, fatigue and swelling. Alert your doctor if you are experiencing any of these side effects.
Things to Avoid While Taking this Medication
As with all medications, you should make sure that your doctor is aware of what you are taking. According to Drugs.com, you should avoid driving or performing operations that require quick thinking. You should also avoid standing up too quickly, as this may cause you to feel lightheaded. Finally, you should avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice as this may interact with verapamil.
