1. Are You Talking to Me?
Unless you want "Are you talking to me?" to become your stock phrase, you'll want to protect your ears when you fire a gun. Extremely loud noises can damage the inner ear and cause hearing loss. The loudness of sounds is measured in decibels (dB), with a normal talking voice being about 60dB. Any sound above 85dB is considered potentially harmful. A chainsaw hits a dangerous 100dB. But, that's nothing in comparison to the sound of gunfire. The blast of a gun can easily top 150dB. Yes, this is serious stuff.
2. Simple Solutions
The most basic, and least expensive, type of hearing protection is the earplug. Humble indeed, but earplugs are a mainstay because of their convenience and cost. The most common earplug is the standard foam model. These are a disposable plug that is compressed and placed in the ear, where it expands and blocks out the noise. Custom molded models are also available. These come in kits and provide instructions for creating your own custom-fit earplug. There is a downside to these models. They typically only reduce the noise by around 25dB. So, that 150dB gun blast still echoes through your ears at a hefty 125dB. Ouch!
3. Complete Covers
Earmuffs are made of a hard outer shell and a soft inner cushion, and they cover the entire ear. But, these are smart earmuffs. Not only do they allow low level sounds through, like conversation, they automatically shut off all sound when it goes above 85dB. It's the best of both worlds! These battery powered earmuffs cost more than simple earplugs, but their flexibility is impressive. Standard earmuffs that simply reduce all noise levels are also available, and they have the same basic limitations as the earplugs.
4. Over the Ear Models
If you don't care for the feel and look of earmuffs, you can still get some of the same function with small, over-the-ear models. These devices look very much like a traditional hearing aid, with a piece sitting behind the ear and a piece that fits in the ear. These guys are smart too. These devices both amplify and protect. Turkeys won't stand a chance, as the device amplifies their high-pitched gobbling. But, when you fire your gun, the device automatically blocks sounds above 110dB. It's still a bit noisy, but it's a step in the right direction.
5. High-Tech Ear Gear
If you're looking for a perfect blend of fashion and function, the high-tech earplugs are for you. These fancy gizmos combine the best of the other technologies in a tiny in-the-ear model. The digital technology effectively blocks background noise. The device is programmable to fit personal needs and allows hunters to hear up to eight times better. The digital earplugs also automatically block noises above 93dB. Some models even come with a choice of tan or orange faceplates--real style for the hunt.
