Men and women both have a susceptibility to gain weight in the gut. This is a common contributor to such conditions as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and even breast cancer. Reducing this weight not only lessens these disease risks, but also can give you added self-confidence. Stationary bikes are low-impact machines activated from a seated position with your legs. Not only do they work your muscles, but they also promote a slimmer stomach.
Spot Reducing Weight
People with a fat gut often do dozens of crunches and situps daily in hopes they can reduce it. This theory of spot reducing, or choosing one part of the body to slim down, is not possible. To lose weight in the stomach, you need to lose weight throughout you body as a whole by performing cardiovascular exercise. Riding a stationary bike is a form of cardio that causes weight loss in your gut and all other areas of the body.
Exercise Adherence
Adhering to an exercise program is the only way to lose gut fat. If you pedal a bike in a sporadic schedule for only a few minutes at a time, you will never slim down your stomach. The goal is to work out often, work out long enough to achieve weight loss and work out every week until your stomach is flat. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that you may need to exercise 60 to 90 minutes a day, five days a week to lose weight. The good news is, you can perform smaller bouts and accumulate your time if it's more convenient.
Intervals for Faster Results
Interval training is performed by alternating your intensity back and forth from high to low. This training tactic yields faster fat-burning results than remaining at a steady pace throughout your workout. As a rule of thumb, follow a 1-to-2 ratio of high-to-low intensity when you pedal. For example, pedal fast for 30 seconds and slow for 60. Simply alternate back and forth for the duration of your training. By pedaling at a fast pace, you also work your abs more intensely.
Metabolic Effect
Any time you perform exercise, your metabolism naturally increases. This means you burn more calories while at rest and further help rid your body of gut fat. Pedaling at a higher intensity causes your metabolism to increase even more.
Diet for Weight Loss
Exercise alone will only take you so far when it comes to losing stomach fat. If you continue to follow bad eating habits and consume as many or more calories than you burn, your progress will be compromised. The best way to slim your midsection is by cutting back on calories in addition to riding a bike. A daily reduction of 500 to 1,000 calories will produce about 1 to 2 pounds of weight loss a week. Base your diet around foods that are high in nutrients like fruits, vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy products.
