How to Remove Belly Hair

Regardless of whether you are a man or a woman, hair removal, especially of unwanted hair on the chest or belly, can be an important part of your grooming routine. Depending on how much you wish to spend, there are several different methods available to help you get rid of unsightly belly hair, with each hair removal option having its own set of drawbacks and benefits.

Step 1

Try a razor. Just like hair on other places of your body, belly hair can be taken care of with shaving cream and a razor. If the belly hair is longer than 1/8 inch, you may want to consider trimming the hair with an electric trimmer first before using a razor to finish the job. The results of shaving will last the least amount of time, but shaving by far is the cheapest method to get rid of the unwanted hair.

Step 2

Use a waxing product. Waxing is another cheap way to get rid of belly hair; However, it can be considerably more painful than other methods. Waxing pulls the hair completely out of the follicle, rather than cutting it at the skin's surface. This means it will take longer for the hair to grow back, as it has to grow back to skin level before it is noticeable.

Step 3

Consider using a depilatory. Depilatories are another common hair removal method, but should not be used on people with sensitive skin. Depilatories use a mixture of sodium hydroxide and thioglycolate. Your hair and skin is held together by chemical bonds called disulfide bonds. The chemicals in depilatories break these bonds and cause the belly hair to fall out.

Step 4

Research laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is by far the most expensive option for removing belly hair but is also the longest lasting. Laser hair removal uses a pulsating beam of laser light that penetrates the surface of the skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, the laser light is powerful enough to instantly destroy the hair follicle. This causes the hair to fall out and prevents future hair from growing. This method normally takes more than one treatment to be successful.
