The liver is a multifaceted gland that provides vital services to almost every other organ. For this reason, the human body cannot sustain life without a functioning liver, according to Colorado State University. The liver is one of the key organs for metabolism and digestive functions including the absorption of dietary lipids. Ultimately, only your doctor can determine whether your liver is working properly. There are a few clues you can watch for that can indicate when you need to see your primary physician to rule out a liver disease.
Step 1
Look at your skin. It should retain the same coloring you've had your whole life. When skin develops a yellow hue, this indicates jaundice. The yellow tint comes from an increase in bilirubin production, which occurs when the liver malfunctions.
Step 2
Examine your eyes. The whites should be clear and free from any yellow coloring.
Step 3
Monitor your digestive health and note problems. Chronic nausea and vomiting can suggest a liver malfunction.
Step 4
Track dietary changes for any variances in appetite or unexplained weight loss. Either of these may be a reflection of your liver function.
Step 5
Check your skin for spider-like blood vessels. These will appear as blue lines under the surface that converge on a center area. The appearance of spider veins can be a sign of liver problems.
Tips and Warnings
- Jaundice is the primary symptom of most liver problems. Other possible signs can be due to different illnesses that have little to do with the liver.
- See a doctor if you have pain on either side or a full feeling in your abdomen. Enlargement of the organs in this area may indicate cirrhosis or liver disease.
