The liver tirelessly carries out more than 500 functions in your body, including filtering the blood, cleansing the body of toxins, producing cholesterol and balancing blood cholesterol levels, synthesizing vitamin D and removing damaged red blood cells. When the liver becomes overworked or damaged, it can leak liver enzymes into the bloodstream. These elevated liver enzymes may be detected in a blood test. In most cases, these levels are mild and do not indicate serious liver damage or disease. Drinking fresh, organic juice in addition to maintaining a balanced diet that limits processed and packaged foods may help to improve your liver function and overall health. However, this is not medically confirmed and a juice detox shuold not be done without the approval of your doctor.
Step 1
Purchase fresh organic apples, beets, celery and lemons. You can also add other fruits and vegetables to your raw juice; however, these are particularly good for your liver function.
Step 2
Wash the fresh organic produce. You can add two to three drops of white vinegar to thoroughly clean the fruit and vegetables. Use three apples, two beets, five sticks of celery and half a lemon to make approximately one glass of fresh juice.
Step 3
Purchase a juicer that is able to separate fresh, raw juice from the pulp and peel. Set up the machine and turn it on.
Step 4
Feed the fruit and vegetables pieces into the juicer's chute on at a time. Catch the juice in a glass. Mix the juice with a spoon once you have juiced all the pieces.
Step 5
Drink the fresh juice immediately. Repeat the juicing process and drink a full glass of raw, organic juice twice a day. Continue drinking fresh juice for at least three days. Maintain a regular balanced diet that contains preservative and chemical-free whole foods.
Tips and Warnings
- Dr. Sandra Cabot, a physician and author, advises that apples in particular help to improve liver function because they contain a substance called pectin. Apples help to remove heavy metal and excess cholesterol from the digestive tract, helping to reduce the workload of the liver. You can also add antioxidant spices such as powdered cinnamon to your juice for flavor and health benefits.
- If you have diabetes, drinking fresh juices, particularly sweet apple and beet juice, may not be suitable because it can increase your blood sugar levels. Consult you doctor before adding fresh juices to your daily, balanced diet. Consult your doctor before beginning any type of stringent diet or exercise program. Do not self-treat chronic or serious liver problems; follow your doctor's prescribed treatment plan.
