In 2002, Heidi Allison published a book titled "The Chili Pepper Diet." Although it did not grow to become an overnight bestseller, it did shed some light on an important fact: Pepper can help you burn body fat. Adding green pepper to your diet does not only improve the taste of your meals, it adds several important health benefits as well.

Green Pepper and Capsaicin

Green pepper contains the chemical compound known as capsaicin. Capsaicin is responsible for the spicy taste of the vegetable. The action of this chemical has been shown to elevate the body’s oxygen consumption and heat production after a meal. Capsaicin quickens your heart rate and body metabolism, making you burn more calories for the duration of its effect.

The Weight Loss Benefit of Capsaicin

A study published in a 2009 edition of the "Journal of Clinical Nutrition" suggests that the action of capsaicin can help in controlling your appetite. People who add green pepper to their diet will, therefore, be able to control their feeding habits better. Another 2010 study, published in the "Journal of Proteome Research," reports that capsaicin is capable of preventing the production of fat. Fashion model Nicola McLean reportedly lost 7 lbs. of her post pregnancy weight in one week with the use of capsaicin.

Dietary Properties of Green Pepper

Green pepper does not contain cholesterol or saturated fat. This makes them a good choice for your salad or snack. Their low calorie content and soluble fiber also make them a choice option as a snack. Green peppers are rich sources of vitamin A, C and K. These vitamins play important roles in your body functions. They improve your immune system, protecting you from diseases.

Health Benefits of Green Pepper

Green pepper contains carotene, an antioxidant that is useful in preventing cellular damage. As an antioxidant, it also can be used in fighting age-related disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Green pepper can be used in fighting asthma, symptoms of the flu, boosting your eyesight and improving your blood circulation, according to Ray Sahelian, M.D.
