As food passes through your gastrointestinal system, a species of yeast called Candida albicans feeds upon sugar molecules in the partially-digested food. Under normal circumstances, candida yeast live in harmony with Lactobacillus acidophilus and other intestinal bacteria. Taking certain medications or altering your diet may cause candida yeast to multiply, leading to health problems. A candida cleanse diet reportedly kills candida yeast and improves your health. Cleanse procedures include taking psyllium husks to flush the colon of waste. Discuss the candida cleanse and your psyllium use with a physician to make sure it is safe.

Candida Diet Plan

The candida diet reportedly creates an unfriendly environment for candida yeast, causing them to die. Candida dieters claim that the plan improves mood, promotes weight loss, eliminates joint aches, restores gastrointestinal normality and improves overall well-being. The candida diet begins with a seven-day cleanse phase designed to remove toxic chemicals and excess yeast from the colon.

Cleanse Phase

People suffering from candida yeast syndrome claim to have excess amounts of candida yeast in their intestines. The purpose of the cleanse phase of the candida diet is to flush the yeast from the intestinal tract through stimulating frequent bowel movements. A candida cleanse also sweeps away toxic chemicals that have accumulated in the colon. During the cleanse, dieters drink large quantities of vegetable broth and drink a detoxifying beverage containing psyllium husks.

Psyllium Husks

Psyllium husks come from the seeds of the psyllium plant. When the seed husks pass through your intestines, they swell with liquid and form a large mass. Increasing the mass of intestinal waste initiates a bowel movement, clearing the psyllium husks and waste products from your colon. The detoxifying beverage that candida cleanse practitioners use includes water, psyllium husks and bentonite clay.

Expert Insight

Although candida diet proponents believe that taking psyllium husks benefits your health because candida is killed and eliminated, scientific evidence does not yet support this claim. However, psyllium husks do initiate bowel movements and can relieve constipation. No scientific studies demonstrate that taking psyllium or following a cleansing diet removes candida yeast or other toxins from your intestines. Thus, talk to a doctor before using psyllium husks or starting the candida cleanse.
