Caffeine not only affects how you behave and feel, it also changes the way your brain and body work. Since caffeine is a stimulant, it speeds up the functions of your central nervous system. This increases your blood pressure, breathing rate and heartbeat. While an amount that falls between 100 to 200mg a day is considered safe, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, larger amounts may cause unpleasant side effects. One of these possible side effects is muscle tremors.

Tremors and Caffeine

Although muscle tremors are not a common side effect of caffeine, they can occur for some people. Individuals who consume large amounts of caffeine, particularly over 500mg a day, are more likely to experience muscle tremors than those who consume lesser amounts. While some people may find the tremors concerning, this side effect is typically not serious and should go away on its own within several hours. However, if you are concerned about your muscle tremors, call a doctor for advice.

Considerations

Since caffeine affects everyone in a slightly different way, some people may experience muscle tremors even when small amounts of caffeine are consumed while others may consume amounts much greater than 500mg a day without experiencing this effect. To know whether or not caffeine is causing your muscle tremors, eliminate all sources of caffeine from your diet for a few weeks. If you still experience tremors even after you quit consuming caffeine, another condition is responsible.

Other Causes of Tremors

Many medical conditions may cause tremors, including brain or nerve disorders, movement disorders, brain tumors, low blood sugar, muscle weakness or tiredness, overactive thyroid, excessive alcohol consumption or alcoholism, alcohol withdrawal, Parkinson’s disease or stroke. Mental conditions, such as stress or anxiety, may also cause muscle tremors. If you believe your muscle tremors may be caused by a condition other than caffeine consumption, see a doctor for proper diagnosis.

Other Effects of Caffeine

In addition to muscle tremors, caffeine can cause many other side effects. Some effects are positive, such as an increase in energy, improvement of mood or better cognitive function and reaction times. Other effects are unpleasant, such as insomnia, jitters, anxiety, high blood pressure, headaches, dizziness and gastrointestinal upset. Many people feel some effects of caffeine within an hour of consumption and may experience the effects for up to 14 hours, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Warning

Although muscle tremors due to caffeine are generally not serious, other tremors can be a cause for concern. Call a doctor if your tremor is worse when you rest or if it is so severe that it interferes with your daily life. If you experience headaches, weakness, muscle tightening or contractions or have an abnormal tongue motion present with your tremor, call your doctor as soon as possible.
