The Nike-Plus software program is designed for runners who train outdoors, but the system also can be used by runners who log their mileage on a treadmill. Part of the appeal of the system, also known as Nike+, is that it gives runners access to data such as time elapsed, pace, mileage and calories burned while on the go. Because most treadmills have a built-in display with such information, runners don’t need the Nike+ system to provide it. But Nike+ offers other benefits through the Nikeplus.com website that a treadmill runner can use. You must register to use the website.

Tracking Your Training

The Nike+ system uses a sensor to record the performance of runners through a wireless connection and a tracking device. When you finish a run, the data can be uploaded to Nikeplus.com and used for a variety of functions. A key benefit for runners who use a treadmill is that the website stores the details of every run that is uploaded. This feature allows a runner to track his progress in terms of time, distance and other specifics that would not typically be stored and retrievable on a treadmill’s display.

Built-in Motivation

Among the benefits of the Nike+ system for a treadmill runner is the ability to track your running history and set goals to improve your performance in terms of speed and distance. The website will monitor your progress toward your goals and alert you to milestones along the way. It acknowledges achievements, such as personal best times by distance. There also is a feature that allows you to measure yourself against other Nike+ members. The website keeps track of every mile you have run since joining, and places you in one of six color-coded levels based on that mileage.

Virtual Coaching

The Nike+Coach feature on Nikeplus.com offers a variety of training programs designed by running experts to guide you toward your goals. The choices range from a Walk to Run program designed to help people start running for the first time to training for full marathons and half-marathons over a 28-week period. Nike+Coach also offers programs geared to specific sports, such as football and soccer.

Running as a Social Activity

Running on a treadmill can be a lonely activity, but Nike+ can help keep you engaged with others. The website offers several social features, including a way to issue challenges to other Nike+ members, playing running-related games such as tag and sharing your running details on Facebook and Twitter. The challenges include “Men vs. Women,” in which members keep track of their mileage by sex daily throughout 2011. It has drawn more than 17,000 participants. The website also has an option to create a running avatar and use it to perform a number of virtual running functions.
