Pregnant women are often praised for their beauty, but after giving birth, people start noticing the leftover belly skin. Even if you had a flat stomach before pregnancy, getting back in shape will take some time and effort. Fortunately, doing this should not affect your breast-feeding, provided you do not put too much strain on your chest when exercising. Additionally, deciding on the correct diet, as suggested by a physician, is essential if you want to see fast results.

Step 1

Consult your physician on what methods are most beneficial. If you already have a diet and exercise plan in mind, discuss it with the doctor; if not, you can always seek advice on the matter. Doing this ensures that you are on a healthy track to losing excess belly skin. It is likely that the doctor will tell you to wait awhile before starting your regimen, as is recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Step 2

Walk for 30 minutes a day, two or three times a week, as this will help your body grow accustomed to exercising. You do not want to start out too intensely. Try to increase the length of your walks with each passing day until you reach a comfortable limit. If walking is not your thing, join an exercise class with other postpartum mothers. Bring along a bottle of water for hydration.

Step 3

Exercise your abdominal muscles and focus on higher-intensity workout routines that target the stomach area. Situps and stretching can help firm up the stomach, tightening any excess skin in the process. Cushion your back against a mat for comfort. One sign that you may be overworking your body is if the vaginal flow known as lochia becomes heavier and changes color to pink or red. Cool down after the exercise by gradually decreasing workout intensity. Be sure to get plenty of rest.

Step 4

Talk to a surgeon about surgical stomach reduction as valid options if you want instantaneous results or are unable to see results from exercising. One method to consider is liposuction. In this procedure, the patient is sedated and incisions are made around the stomach area. The cannula, or tube, is inserted into the incisions and the fat is vacuumed. The incisions are then closed up and, after healing, the stomach should be flat and free of any cut marks. Another common procedure is abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck,” which involves surgically removing excess skin around certain areas of the abdomen. You can combine this with liposuction if desired.
