Sleeping in an awkward position can result in waking up with a stiff neck. The pain is caused by strain of the muscle and tendons related to the positioning of the bones, joints or disks. Luckily, a stiff neck is easily treated at home and the discomfort should resolve within two to three days.
Why There is Pain
Usually neck pain after sleeping is caused by sleeping too long in an awkward position. First, the joints will essentially jam so the neck will be stuck in that position. The body can sense this abnormality and order the neck muscles to stiffen as to prevent further injury.
Over-the-Counter Anti-Inflammatory
The muscles and tendons are often inflamed in the case of a stiff neck. Taking an OTC anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or naproxen can alleviate the associated inflammation and pain. Acetaminophen does not have the same anti-inflammatory properties but can help ease the pain. The pain relieving properties will also alleviate discomfort associated with bone, joint, and disk pain. Always check with your physician or pharmacist before taking any new medications.
Ice and Heat
Cold and warm compresses can help alleviate the inflammation and pain. Use a cold compress first. Wrap ice in a towel and apply it to the neck for 20 minutes every two to three hours for up to 72 hours. This will help reduce any swelling and the pain associated with it.
If after 72 hours there is still discomfort, switch to moist heat. Standing in a warm shower can help tremendously. Apply heat for 20 minutes every three to four hours.
Stretching Exercises
Gentle stretching can help work out a stiff neck. Slowly bend the head to each side as if touching each ear to the shoulder. Stretch forward by touching the chin to the chest, then back by looking up to the ceiling. Turn the head to one side, then the other. Hold each stretch for three seconds before returning to straight ahead.
Massage
Have someone gently massage the stiff area. It is also possible to do this alone by rolling a tennis ball along the neck muscles to help loosen them.
When to Call the Doctor
Contact your physician if the pain has persisted beyond five days, is severe or is accompanied by fever.
