Some doctors prescribe drugs commonly used to treat other conditions such as depression or seizures to help patients lose weight, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Two of the most popular drugs used “off label” in this fashion include Wellbutrin XL and Topamax. Before using any drug for weight loss purposes, carefully evaluate the potential benefits versus potential risks.
Topamax Basics
Topamax is the brand name for topiramate, a drug that doctors typically prescribe to treat migraine headaches, seizures, alcoholism or mood swings, notes PubMed Health. If your doctor prescribes Topamax for its weight loss side effects, you would likely take it twice daily with or without food. While the weight loss side effect is desirable if you’re overweight, you might also experience other unwanted side effects such as depression, speech problems, difficulty concentrating and extreme thirst.
Topamax and Weight Loss
About 75 percent of people who take Topamax lose weight whether or not they intended to do so, according to the American Diabetes Association. If you take Topamax, you could lose anywhere from about 5 percent to 16.5 percent of your starting weight. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will not approve Topamax as an official diet drug because of its potential side effects. Dieters have experienced memory impairment, dizziness, taste distortion and fatigue after taking the medication.
Wellbutrin XL Basics
Wellbutrin XL is the brand name for the antidepressant bupropion, according to PubMed Health. Some doctors not only prescribe it to help people lose weight, but also to overcome smoking or anxiety disorders. If you have a history of anorexia or cannot control your alcohol consumption, do not take Wellbutrin XL. It can take up to four weeks for you to experience the full benefits of bupropion, which include decreasing your appetite and improving your mood. You can safely take Wellbutrin XL and Topamax together, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center Drug Checker.
Wellbutrin XL Side Effects
If you are under 24 years old, you should exercise special caution when taking antidepressants such as Wellbutrin XL, warns PubMed Health. In some cases, Wellbutrin XL and similar drugs have caused suicidal thoughts or behavior. Other potential side effects besides appetite reduction and weight loss include dry mouth, vomiting, excessive sweating, dry mouth, dizziness and headache. If you notice hives, chest pain or itching, immediately call a medical professional.
