When you're in a rush to lose weight, going on a quick diet that still allows you to eat ice cream might seem like the most effective solution. The three-day diet is a dangerous and ineffective fad diet because it involves eating very small portions of low-calorie foods for three days in an attempt to starve the body. Grapefruit is nutritious, but not as part of a three-day fad diet. Talk to your doctor if you're thinking of trying the three-day diet to lose weight.

Background

The three-day diet is a fad diet program that has been passed around the Internet. There is no attributed creator of the diet, although it is sometimes falsely attributed to hospitals and medical centers like the Mayo Clinic. The three-day diet was not created by or approved by any doctor or medical center.

Sample Meals

For breakfast, dieters eat half a grapefruit, a piece of toast with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and a cup of black coffee. This meal contains approximately 250 calories and 9 grams of fat. For lunch, dieters eat a hard-boiled egg, a piece of toast and black coffee. This meal contains 180 calories and 5 grams of fat. A typical dinner consists of 1 cup of steamed carrots, 1 cup of melon, 1 cup of cauliflower, 1 cup of canned tuna and 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream. This dinner contains approximately 494 calories and 9.6 grams of fat.

Results

Whenever you put yourself on a very low-calorie diet, you are burning more calories through physical activity and exercise than you are taking in. Whenever you create this calorie deficit in the body, you are likely to lose weight. However, this weight will return unless you are prepared to follow the three-day diet for the rest of your life. As soon as you resume your normal diet, any weight you lost will return.

Healthy Diet Plans

Instead of relying on a dangerous fad diet to help you lose weight, follow a healthy diet and exercise plan that will help you lose weight and keep it off in the long run. Eat a nutritious diet of healthy foods in moderation, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. Exercise every day to burn extra calories and maintain your healthy weight.
