In addition to helping to prepare you for birth by strengthening your muscles and helping you to practice breathing control, exercise can also reduce current pregnancy symptoms and ailments. The amount of exercise you can do depends on many factors, including your activity level before you got pregnant. Your doctor can help you find an exercise plan that works best for your health situation, and possibly one that focuses on specific symptoms you are experiencing.

Fatigue and Pain

Exercising could help reduce fatigue, a symptom that is especially common in your first trimester. Exercise releases endorphins that give your body more energy, so regular workouts might reduce your tiredness overall. It also strengthens muscles and joints in areas like your back and legs, so you are less likely to experience pain with your growing body.

Other Symptoms

According to KidsHealth, exercise during pregnancy increases movement in your intestines, which reduces constipation that occurs during pregnancy. It also helps you to relieve stress and anxiety that can inhibit your ability to sleep, making your nights more restful.

Recommendations

Focus on moderate-intensity exercises while you are pregnant, like walking, swimming and yoga. As a general rule, you should be able to talk while you are exercising to make sure you aren't straining yourself. Stretch before and after physical activity, start your exercises gradually and be sure to drink plenty of water.

Warnings

Keep in mind that while you are pregnant, it is easier to lose your balance. Slow down your exercise routine if you experience fatigue, dizziness, pain or shortness of breath. You may not be able to exercise if you are already experiencing high blood pressure, vaginal bleeding or early contractions, so talk to your doctor if you are unsure whether you are able to exercise.
