Boniva, also called ibandronate, is prescribed to menopausal women as an osteoporosis prevention treatment. These tablets are available by prescription only and are not considered a vitamin or mineral supplement. According to Pub Med Health, Boniva also may be prescribed for other uses. Do not take Boniva in place of calcium supplements unless directed to by your physician.
Identification
Boniva belongs to a group of drugs called bisphosphonates. Boniva is not a calcium supplement, although it alters the cycle of bone formation and the way bones break down in the body. according to Drugs.com. Boniva works to slow down the process of bone loss while simultaneously building bone mass. This medication is normally prescribed for women after menopause to prevent osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones get more porous and thin, which makes it easy for them to fracture with little impact.
Usage
Drugs.com warns that you should not take Boniva if you cannot sit in an upright position or stand for least an hour, since Boniva can cause serious problems in the stomach and esophagus. Take this medication at least one hour before eating breakfast in the morning. Do not take other medications within an hour of taken Boniva. If you are instructed to take calcium supplements to also assist with slowing down bone loss, take your calcium supplement an hour after taking Boniva. Swallow your pill with a full glass of water and do not crush or chew the tablet.
Side Effects
Less serious side effects of Boniva include back pain, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, nausea or upset stomach and pain in the arms and legs. If you develop symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty or pain on swallowing, heartburn, severe joint or bone pain, jaw pain or numbness and swelling in the jaw, contact your doctor immediately and stop using Boniva.
Considerations
If your physician feels you need Boniva to help prevent osteoporosis, ask your physician if you should also take calcium supplements. The recommended daily allowance of calcium per day is 1,000 mg per day until the age of 71, when it is increased to 1,200 mg.
