How to Refrigerate Fish Oil

Fish oil contains DHA and EPA, both of which are healthy omega-3 fatty acids that may reduce your risk of stroke, lower blood pressure and combat heart disease, making it a worthy supplement. But since omega-3 fatty acids degrade quickly when exposed to sunlight, heat and oxygen, a better place to store them is in the refrigerator instead of a cabinet. Fish oil can turn rancid, giving it a strong unpleasant flavor. With proper storage, your fish oil should last at least as long as the expiration date on the bottle.

Step 1

Keep fish oil supplements in a dark, airtight container. Most supplements are sold in dark containers. Either keep the supplements in their original packaging, or when transferring, choose a dark container.

Step 2

Seal the container tightly after each use.

Step 3

Store fish oil capsules in the refrigerator after opening to keep them fresh. Most capsules are shelf stable, but last longer when stored in the refrigerator. Always store liquid fish oil in the refrigerator after it is opened.

Step 4

Throw away the supplements when the expiration date is reached, or when the supplements taste rancid. Sample a small amount of the fish oil to test for rancidity. For capsules, poke a small hole in the end of the gelcap with a pin to release some of the oil to taste it.

Tips and Warnings

  • Store fish oil in the freezer as another option. Taking the capsule frozen may also eliminate the fishy belches some experience after swallowing fish oil.
